A. PREPARATORY ACTIONS

A.1 DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGICAL DECISION TREE

In October 2015 a Methodological Decision Tree design is finished. This tree avoids an inefficient implementation of the project due to unexpected problems.

Oct 15 - Dic 20

B. IMPLEMENTATION ACTIONS

B.1 CHARACTERIZATION OF LOCAL SEWAGE SLUDGE AS BIOLOGICAL BY-PRODUCT

To evaluate the variability - in the time and along the treatment process- of composition of sludge from the selected wastewater treatment plant in terms of agronomic parameters, heavy metals, pathogens and organic pollutants, have been carried out the sewage sludge characterization in a large number of regional WWTP (January 2016), and selected the 5 WWTP for the exhaustive characterization of the sludge (June 2016)

B.2 CHARACTERIZATION OF LOCAL BIOMASS FLY ASH AS TECHNICAL BY-PRODUCT

Before being used as an adsorbing agent in the sludge management prototype and as an environmentally friendly construction material, ash sampling (January 2016) was carried out to perform the characterization tests for biomass ash (March 2016) and the first mortar mixes with ashes (April 2016), from which the first conclusions were obtained concerning the active surface of the ashes from biomass for the adsorption of metals (October 2016)new sampling was carried out in February 2017.

B.3 VALIDATION IN LABORATORY OF THE REDUCTION OF HEAVY METALS CONTENTS IN SEWAGE SLUDGE USING BIOMASS FLY ASH

To test the capacity of local biomass fly ash as adsorbent agent of heavy metals content in local sewage sludge, the following tests were performed:

Heavy metals adsorption trials (March 2016)

Sewage sludge heavy metals reduction trials with fly ash (May 2016)

Selective solubilization trials for heavy metals reduction in sewage sludge with fly ash (July 2016)

Solid- liquid adsorption trials for heavy metals reduction in sewage sludge with fly ash(August 2016)

B.4 VALIDATION IN LABORATORY OF PROPOSED TREATMENTS FOR PATHOGENS AND ORGANIC POLLUTANTS IN SEWAGE SLUDGE

By assessing the adsorption capacity of organic pollutants from fly ash on solutions of organic compounds, establishing parameters that affect efficiency. To test on the cleaned sludge of heavy metals obtained in the previous action, trials on pathogens an organic contaminants reduction in sewage sludge by composting (August 2016) were be made. This compost has been applied to a corn trial.

In June 2017 Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) have also been included in the study of their removal capacity with fly ash from sewage sludge

B.5 DESIGN AND SETTING UP OF PROTOTYPE FOR REDUCING HEAVY METALS CONTENT IN SEWAGE SLUDGE

Prototype that implements the conceptual design of a physicalchemical sewage sludge treatment process for reducing the heavy metal concentration among others pollutants and obtain an optimized sludge for a secondary fertilizer fabrication process with zero wastes involved.
